Corn Salad, also known as Lamb’s Lettuce, is a very useful and hardy salad plant. It has soft green leaves with a nutty flavour. It is an annual and can withstand very low temperatures so can be grown outside in the garden with little protection. It has a low growing habit. It has long been recorded as being cultivated as a valuable winter salad containing vitamin C, beta-carotene, B6, iron, and potassium. It is pretty amazing to be able to pick nutritious green salad from your garden during the winter months.
Sow directly into well-prepared ground or a good quality Top Soil by broadcasting the seed and raking it over gently. Sow any time from July until October. Thin plants as they grow to 10-15 cm apart. Harvest from September until March taking single leaves or the whole plant.
Pests and diseases: Corn salad suffers very little from pests or diseases. Young plants can be damaged by slugs and powdery mildew can cause problems in certain conditions.
